10 New Tomato Varieties you Should Try

We are continually updating our range with new varieties of tomato seed from different countries that have attracted our attention or have been requested by customers.  Here are just a few recent additions:

 

Ben Hur
An indeterminate special hybrid from Italy that can be grown under cover or outdoors.  The vigorous plant is resistant to splitting, as well as resisting verticillium, fusarium and stemphillium.  The large, uneven fruit has a superb taste and can be harvested when still tinged green. Canestrino di Lucca
Large and pear shaped ribbed fruit with lots of flesh, grown in Tuscany (hence the place name of Lucca) with Canestrino meaning “little basket”.  Indeterminate plant.  Harvested for a gourmet flavour when still slightly green.  Eat fresh or cook for a special paste or sauce. Fiaschetto
Tasty hybrid said to be as sweet as melon.  Grows as a determinate bush so suits containers.  Very resistant to mosaic virus, verticillium, fusarium and nematodes.  Means “flask” in Italian – in its Puglia region, it is grown for a delicious sauce and, as not commonly grown commercially, it is a rare treat. Gardeners Delight
Gardener’s Delight is a popular variety of tomato to grow in the UK.  Indeterminate, growing to approx 2m.  Produces trusses of  lovely cherry tomatoes with a superb taste under cover or outdoors. You can buy Gardeners Delight here.

Harzglut F1
Reliable German type. Suits under cover or outdoors.  Ripens early. Resists mosaic virus and cladosporium.  Aromatic flesh can be eaten fresh or cooked. Indeterminate.   An improvement on the variety called Harzfeuer meaning Resin Fire.  Both names being actually named after the Harz mountains, the variety was popular in former East Germany in dacha (country house) gardens. you can buy Harzglut tomato seeds here.

Horus
Indeterminate Italian variety.  Very productive and suitable for growing outdoors in a sheltered area as well as under cover.  Clusters of average sized salad fruit are resistant against most diseases, including verticillium, fusarium, mosaic virus Tmv, cladosporium.  Can be harvested tinged green or fully mature.  Horus was an ancient Egyptian god. Marglobe
Tomato seeds for the Marglobe produce a very popular round tomato with an excellent flavour. This is a good producer and quite an early variety that will really get the taste buds going and will still be producing into late August.  Semi-determinate variety, named after its ancestors, the Marvel and Globe types, when developed in 1917.  Vigorous heirloom is the predecessor of many hybrid varieties and resists many diseases such as verticillium, fusarium, blight and blossom end rot.  Lovely round fruit with excellent flavour and suited to slicing.  Highly sought after, you can get them here.

Montfavet 63-5 F1
One of the earliest French hybrids.  Grow under cover or outdoors.  Early and very productive with heavy flesh fruit.  Indeterminate.  Montfavet is a village in France. Buy Montfavet tomato seeds here.

Olivade
One of the best early plum tomatoes, so highly regarded, full of flavour and with resistance against most diseases.  Can be grown under cover or in a sheltered area outdoors.  Thick flesh so suited for salads and sauces. Indeterminate.  Olivade is also an  RHS Award Winner, you can buy seeds here.

Sibari
Determinate vigorous plant produces a special San Marzano type of fruit from Sibari in southern Italy.  Tomatoes are long, cylindrical and pointed with an excellent flavour, especially when mature.  Can be eaten fresh, for processing or used for drying.  Suits mechanical harvesting.  Resistant to verticillium and fusarium.
